Pool Pumps & Motors

The pool's pump is the heart of the circulation system. Water is taken into the system through the skimmer near the surface and the main drain at the bottom, and/or through pipelines installed for suction-type cleaners.

The water is drawn through the plumbing system to the pump, then through the filter and heater and back to the pool or spa through side returns or, in some cases, in-floor cleaning systems or water features.

There have been advances in pump technology over the years; from the older brass pumps with an "open face" impeller (much like a propeller), to today's efficient models made of high strength composite plastic with closed impellers. These newer, high head pumps will still perform well when the filter is dirty or cleaners are installed. Advances in the efficiency of pool motors is the driving force in today's new pumps. One such advance is the wider use of 2 speed motors which can circulate water for a longer period of time at a lower speed to save energy.

The latest technological update is the 3 phase pool motor which can run on standard household electrical current. These motors can be programmed to operate at any speed from .5 - 3 hp. Some are also now equipped with anti-entrapment technology (SVRS) that automatically turns the pump off if it detects a sudden jump in pressure. These pumps are in compliance with the Virginia Graeme Baker Act that took effect 12/19/2009 for all public and semi-public swimming pools. They also comply with the new Arizona law Title 44 (effective 1/1/2012 for all residential pools) which requires all new or replaced pool pump motors to be energy efficient. These pumps can save the homeowner as much as 80% on operating costs, depending on the speed settings and local rates for electricity. Currently, both APS & SRP are offering an instant $200 energy rebate if purchased and installed through Desert Sparkle or another authorized dealer. Call us today before the offer expires!
